James “Tommy” Barfield, PE, has joined Atkins’ department of transportation (DOT) business unit as senior project director, bringing 30 years of management in multimodal planning and transportation design to the firm. In his role with Atkins, Barfield will focus on expanding the transportation business in Florida, focused on delivering project performance that exceeds client expectations.

“Tommy’s extensive transportation experience made him an obvious choice to enhance our DOT business unit,” said Mark Micikas, PE, Atkins vice president and DOT sector manager for Florida. “As a former district secretary for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Tommy has overseen projects that have been critical to the sustainability of Florida’s transportation planning and growth.”

Throughout his career, Barfield has provided strategic guidance on some of Florida’s most important projects, including the expansion of transportation corridors in Northwest Florida. Well recognized for his extensive career with FDOT, Barfield earned the reputation for advancing projects from the concept planning phase to construction. His accomplishments include development and delivery of a $3 billion, five-year work program for FDOT.

As a lifelong Florida resident, Barfield has a vested interest in enhancing safety and combining environmentally-sensitive solutions with innovative project delivery. Most recently, he directed a $450 million design-build project that initiated the replacement of the Pensacola Bay Bridge, which runs between Gulf Breeze and Pensacola, Florida.

Barfield has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and is based in Atkins’ Tallahassee office.
